Sound Design for VR Learning Environments

While at NYU Zach was a Sound Design intern at NYU’s Create Lab, where he completed audio designs and compositions for VR/AR applications, experimenting with spatial audio and procedural audio’s role in learning retention. Zach’s sound design work for the lab’s Inside Cosmos and Inside Cells VR apps, now available on Steam, included environmental sounds, UI and UX sound design and some interactive sounds utilizing procedural audio concepts in Unity.

This research was performed by creating sounds under a strict set of regulations and studying how learners perform based on major vs minor intervals, ascending melodies, percussion, and timbre of these sounds.

Sound Design for Performance

Zach has worked on multiple experimental theater, live performance, and dance shows providing original sound design and compositions. This short video is from producer and choreographer Kiara Benn’s ‘Just for You’ where an introduction sequence is played and features Zach’s field recordings, recordings of household objects, guitars and synths to create a mystic but familiar soundscape. This show took place during Benn’s Residency at The Wooster Group’s Performing Garage in Soho. More recently, Zach served as sound designer and recording engineer for an artist residency at Wesleyan University, working on esteemed director Kaneza Schaal’s ‘Litany For the Grieving Sister’s’ based on a text by award-winning author, Sadiya Hartman.
